Leading the Hedies 2015 Nominee’s List is Olamide, with eight
nods in categories including Best Pop Single, Best Collaboration
(twice), Rap Album, Best Streethop Artiste, Album of the Year, Artiste
of the Year and Song of the Year. This is his second lead in a row (as
in 2014).
Following closely with seven nominations is Wizkid who grabbed
nominations in categories such as Best Pop Single, Best Recording of the
Year,
Song of the Year, Artiste of the Year, Best RnB/Pop Album, Best
pop Single and Best Collaboration.
Olamide and Wizkid go head-to-head for the Artiste of the Year and
Song of the Year Award which for obvious reasons are one of the biggest
awards in the list with other tough contenders like Davido, P-Square,
Yemi Alade in the Artiste of the Year Category, and Kiss Daniel, Korede
Bello, making new entrants and contenders for the Song of the Year.
Taking a close look at the most coveted category, “Next Rated”, which
as usual comes along with a brand new car for the winner. We see
Reekado Banks, Korede Bello, Kiss Daniel, Cynthia Morgan and Lil’ Kesh
vying to be called the Next Rated Artiste of 2015. Owning this title is
akin to being anointed as the next “Big thing”. The importance of this
category cannot be over emphasized as it signifies that amongst the
contenders, this Artiste is more likely to have a successful year by
popular vote. This we’ve seen in the cases of past winners like
Patoranking (2014), Sean Tizzle (2013), DavidO (2012), Wizkid (2011),
Skuki (2010), Omawumi (2009), Wande Coal (2008), Overdose (2007) and Asa
(2006).
This year, the competition promises to be fierce. The five nominees
have got their A-game on and each one is hard to knock off. The nominees
are relatively matched and without doubt they have a serious shot at
winning. Only two female acts have clinched a Headie plaque in this
category since its inception. Should Cynthia Morgan king this year,
she’ll be the 3rd female with the “Next Rated” Award.
In some of the other major races, Di’Ja, Adekunle Gold, Ugovinna and
Simi, all first time nominees, will battle it out with Bez and Asa in
the “Best Alternative Song” Category. Also, in the “Producer of the
Year” category we’ll watch Masterkraft, Shizzi and Young John contend
with four-time winner, Don jazzy and two-time winner, Cobhams Asuquo.
Cassper Nyovest, AKA, Uhuru, all South African nominees will contend
with Ghanaian Sakordie and Diamond Platnumz from Tanzania for the Award
of Africa Artiste of the Year.
Since inception, the Artistes with the most Headie’s Plaque include;
Mode9 (10), P-Square (7), 2Face Idibia (6), Olamide (6), M.I. (6), 9ice
(5), DavidO (5), Wande Coal (5), D’Banj (5), Jude Okoye (5).
Nominees and Fans are gearing up for the biggest and most prestigious Awards – The Headies 2015.
